What is your favorite Aveda product right now?

We all have favorite products. Some stand the test of time, while others are seasonal trends. Here’s what’s hot at Rick Mosley Hair this summer.

Bree Moore – Aveda Air Control Hair Spray

Another product that not only adds a finishing touch, but also can add grip. Bree even uses Air Control as a dry shampoo to prep her hair before styling. When used as a hair spray, it goes on dry and doesn’t leave your hair crunchy. Plus, like many other great Aveda products, Bree loves how it smells!

Tony Sadiq – Aveda Men Pure-Formance Grooming Clay

Always at the top of Tony’s favorite products, Grooming Clay works well with fine hair, is not greasy and leaves a matte finish. No matter whether you are going for a sleek or messy look, Tony says Clay can help!

Abbey Longstreet – Aveda’s Dry Shampoo

Also a newer product, Abbey is stuck on Aveda’s newest Dry Shampoo. It smells good while applying but doesn’t leave your hair with an overwhelming smell all day. The product gives some grip and has a cool applicator. Plus, it helps you go longer between washings, which prolongs the life of your color.

Dusty Rhode Visits Rick Mosley Hair to Teach the Latest in Cutting

RMH is dedicated to continuing education for its team members

Dusty Rhode teaches a cutting class at Rick Mosley Hair

Dusty Rhode teaches a cutting class at Rick Mosley Hair

One of the most successful and influential hairdressers of our times, Dusty Rhode, visited Rick Mosley Hair last month to share cutting tips with our team.  We were thrilled to welcome this passionate professional to West Des Moines to spend one day teaching the latest in men’s haircut trends and another day focused on women’s styles.

Dusty has trained at the Vidal Sassoon and American Crew Academies and has worked behind the chair since graduating from the Aveda Institute in 1997.  He has written salon curriculum, helped develop new hair products and has been featured at national hair shows.  In fact, Tony appeared on stage with him at the 2013 Aveda Congress and was just asked to do so again at the Mid-America Show in October in Cincinnati.

The 2005 Men’s Stylist of the Year finalist now focuses on sharing his talent and passion to help grow other hair professionals.  During his men’s cutting class at Rick Mosley Hair, he focused on the basics of building hair shapes that work well with different face and head shapes.  Unlike a barber would do, Dusty shared with our team the importance of not cutting the hair too short or slimming the sides too much.  Instead, keep it disconnected and pompadour-like.

Stop in to Rick Mosley Hair today to discuss your hair options with one of our cutting specialists.  Our commitment to ongoing training and education is second-to-none, and you’ll notice it in the quality of hair cutting you receive from our salon professionals.

2016 Hair Trend Report

Bold, Unconventional and Over-the-Top Hairstyles Will Hit the Runways

2016According to Behind the Chair, this season is all about celebrating individuality.  Stylists will be mixing textures, structures, shapes and eras to give each client his or her own personal look.

Bold cuts, such as cheekbone-length bobs, will take center stage, but wavy textures will make the look more modern.  Tapered sides with angles and long layers started to catch on over the past few months and we believe this trend will continue.  Longer hair will be pinned, braided and given that “wet hair” look.

Trendy pastel and gray coloring in 2015 will be set aside and more natural hair colors will prevail.  Platinum will continue to be hot through Spring and Summer, while the look will be a bit more natural and effortless than last season.  Some fashionistas also predict that glitter and gel will be used this year to revitalize roots between colorings – we’ll see if that trend hits Central Iowa.

Styles will be influenced by everything from Star Wars to London’s punk scene, and the color gold will take over in the New Year.  So whether your style is effortlessly chic or is inspired by the 90’s club scene, stop by Rick Mosley Hair today to discuss how our stylists can help you bring out your inner style.

Bring in photos or pin your favorite looks to your Instagram or Pinterest pages so you can show us a glimpse of what you’re going for.  We also carry a full line of Aveda hair products and make-up to help you complete your look.

Shampure Dry Shampoo’s non-aerosol powder mist absorbs excess oil between washings.  You’ll also love how it smells and that it is 99.8% naturally derived (from plants, non-petroleum minerals or water.)  And, it contains no talc or aerosol!  The product adds texture, goes on clean and doesn’t leave a residue.

To use, tip the bottle upside down. Return upright and turn the cap to expose the nozzle.  Lightly squeeze bottle to puff powder toward your roots.  Squeeze lightly until you see how much comes out with each puff, and then tip the bottle as needed to increase powder flow.  Massage the dry shampoo into your scalp and restyle as desired.

Tips for Use

  • Hold the base of the cap firmly in place with one hand and turn the top to expose the nozzle.
  • Make sure to close the cap when you’re finished to avoid spills.

Why Waves are All the Rage

Summer styles featuring shoulder-length waves transition well into the back to school season

Many celebrities have adopted this great look.

Many celebrities have adopted this great look.

Selena Gomez and Christina Aguilera are just two of the many Hollywood Stars who have traded in lengthy locks or extensions for wavy shoulder-length hairdos.

You too can achieve the loose “Boho Waves” look.  The key to this look is to make your hair wavy without having a defined curl pattern.

Start by applying a texturing product, such as Aveda Thickening Tonic.  Then use a medium-sized curling iron and wrap small sections at a time toward your face.  Keep hold of the piece you just curled, unwrap it from the iron and then re-wrap it around the barrel again going in the opposite way.  One you have done all sections, use your fingers to soften and fluff the waves before spraying with Aveda Air Control hairspray.

Or, if you have super-straight hair, try loosely braiding it in three or four sections.  Leave the braids in for 15 to 30 minutes.  When you take them out, you’ll have perfectly imperfect bends.  For a slightly more sophisticated look, you can pull small sections away from your face and insert bobby pins.

Set up an appointment with your favorite Rick Mosley Hair stylist today and we’ll show you how you can achieve this effortless look.

Our “Nature’s Rebellion” theme captured the judges’ hearts at the second-annual Catwalk for Water Show

Aveda and Rick Mosley Hair (RMH) have been committed to Earth Month and supporting clean water efforts for years.  This year was no different, except that we extended the effort into May!

On Sunday, May 3, RMH team members participated in Aveda Iowa Network’s second annual Trashion/Catwalk for Water Show, created to raise awareness of one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time – clean water.  The sold-out event raised nearly $25,000 for the Audubon Society, an organization working diligently to protect and preserve Iowa’s waterways.  Aveda salons from around Iowa shared their flare for art and fashion, as well as their commitment to fundraising.

We are proud of the RMH team for walking away with top honors in the “Best Hair” category of this green carpet event.  A special thanks to employees Kelsey Weier for being our model, Abbey Longstreet who styled her hair, Bree Moore who did her make-up, and Taylor Wheeler who provided moral support.  All of you went above and beyond, putting in extra hours to showcase your skills and creativity.

Our runway entry was themed, “Nature’s Rebellion – aka Jane Doe.”  To create our repurposed look, tree branches were wrapped in hair extensions and attached to a pair of headphones.  The outfit was constructed with old plaid shirts, lots of patches and a shotgun shell necklace.  Together, we created a look that celebrates beauty, fashion and Aveda’s mission to care for the world we live in.

Since 1999, Aveda has helped raise over $36 million for environmental causes, with more than $32 million going toward clean water projects at home and around the world.Be sure to congratulate your Rick Mosley Hair stylist the next time you are in the salon!

Thick, Course, Curly Hair Has Met its Match!

Aveda’s Smooth Infusion makes hair soft, frizz-less, light weight and smooth without using chemicals or causing breakage

Aveda's Smooth Infusion will work wonders on your hair!

Aveda’s Smooth Infusion will work wonders on your hair!

This new and improved product from Aveda is receiving rave reviews from Rick Mosley Hair customers.  We’ve heard many positive stories so far about how Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight Styling Creme is saving customers time and they are loving the results.

When applied prior to blow-drying, Smooth Infusion keeps your hair straight, flyaway free, and frizz-less for days.  And the best part is that it gets progressively better with every use.  Once you have used it for five consecutive days, your hair should stay straight for up to three washes.

Even intense humidity isn’t a match for Smooth Infusion, which is safe for use on relaxed and color-treated hair.

How it works

It’s easy to use – Just wash your hair and then dry with a towel.  Afterwards, thoroughly apply the citrusy smelling product in sections and brush it while you blow it dry.  Remember that a little bit of product goes a long ways!  As you blow-dry your hair, plant-derived fibers help create a locking layer to help hold your hair straight, day after day.  Organic cassava root helps form a barrier against humidity to help you forget about frizz.

Drying and styling times even become shorter and the process becomes easier.  If needed, use a flat iron to touch up.  Another option is using Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother first to set the foundation for a beautiful straight style.

Results get better and better each day so don’t give up after days one, two or three!

Smooth Infusion is a great alternative to keratin treatments and works on all hair types, especially thick, course and curly hair.  Make it your “go-to” blowout prep smoother!

Another Rick Mosley Hair FAQ

Save time in 2015 by washing your hair less often

RMH FAQsHave you ever had a question about hair that you’re too nervous to ask? We’re here to help! We get questions from clients all of the time, so we’ve started posting responses to those we hear most frequently.

Question:

How often should I wash my hair?

Answer:

Many people think they need to wash their hair daily to keep it clean and healthy. Today, we’re here to dispel this myth, as washing your hair less often is actually better for your locks because washing dries out your hair and strips it of nutrients.

Put more time and energy into your New Year’s Resolutions to exercise and sleep more by spending less time washing, drying and styling your hair this year. All you need to do is change your routine to wash your hair three times per week. Of course everyone’s hair is different, but most hair types will adjust to this schedule quite quickly.

On off days, spray Pure Abundance Style Prep liberally onto dry hair, comb and re-style to give your hair a fresh look. If you exercise frequently, you can rinse your hair and condition it (without washing) in order to remove sweat.

Worried your hair will be greasy if you wash it less frequently?  Actually, the oil levels in your hair will adjust after a week or two. If you wash your hair daily, your body produces enough oil for that schedule. If you wash it less frequently, less oil will be produced. It also helps to comb through your hair well before washing it to help pull the oil through from your scalp to your ends, as the oil naturally helps condition your hair.

Who doesn’t want big, long lashes like the Kardashians?

Rick Mosley Hair now offers eyelash extensions

Are you ready for that get-up-and-go look?  Many Rick Mosley Hair clients are going crazy about the new eyelash extension service now offered by Kelsey.  Just think of how easy it would be going through the holidays – especially if you have houseguests or are going to be traveling – without having to deal with eye makeup!

The Basics

On average, it takes about 2 ½ hours to have a full set of eyelashes applied.  Kelsey glues faux mink hair on to your individual lashes to create a look that lasts about six weeks and costs $175.  Like your hair, eyelashes shed so you need to have them maintained every three to four weeks.

Different sizes are available so you can customize your length to make them very natural looking or much more dramatic.  The extensions do not damage your lashes when they are applied correctly and are properly maintained.  They can even be removed if needed.  And, sensitive glue is an option for clients with concerns.

“I love that I look awake and lively without having to put on makeup with my eyelash extensions, and I get so many compliments,” said RMH client Michelle Parks.  “The application process is easy and painless so I can’t imagine not having them.”

Care

Maintenance is easy.  Just try not to get them too wet.  If you do, a hairdryer can help blow them dry.  Also, use oil free makeup remover so the glue isn’t impacted.  Finally, be sure to run through them frequently with mascara brush.  Following these simple steps should help them last longer.

At RMH, we use Blink brand faux mink hair, which gives lashes a feathery look.  Customers like this product because they are lighter weight than other options.  Give us a call today to schedule a time to meet with Kelsey for a consultation.  We’re sure you’ll be a satisfied customer, as eyelash extensions will enhance your overall appearance!
