Rick Mosley Hair Colorists Become Hair Artists

A New Line of Pulp Riot Colors Add a Pop of Fun to All Hair Types

Ever notice someone with a hint of blue or green in their hair?  Ever wonder what an accent color could do to your look?

This look features an all-over pink wash.

At Rick Mosley Hair, we’re always staying on top of new trends and products, and one we’re most excited about is a new line of color from Pulp Riot.  For the past few months, we’ve been using these brighter and more vibrant colors on clients, both as accents and as all-over color.

These trendy fashion colors range from deep shades to pastels.  Even members of our Rick Mosley Hair team are trying them out.  For example, our receptionist Taylor just jumped on the bandwagon with an all-over pink color, while stylist Maria went with a green accent.

“This new line of color not only smells fantastic, we’re noticing it lasts much longer than previous products we’ve tried,” explains Rick Mosley Hair colorist Abbey Longstreet.  “Think of them as the colors you don’t find in nature.”

Or, go for a brighter spot color.

We’re seeing our Central Iowa clients becoming braver than ever when it comes to color trends.  Are you ready to take the leap?  We’re here to help.  Schedule an appointment today to discuss your best options with a professional at Rick Mosley Hair.

Hot Aveda Products!

What is your stylist’s favorite product right now?

What is your favorite Aveda product right now?

We all have favorite products. Some stand the test of time, while others are seasonal trends. Here’s what’s hot at Rick Mosley Hair this summer.

Bree Moore – Aveda Air Control Hair Spray

Another product that not only adds a finishing touch, but also can add grip. Bree even uses Air Control as a dry shampoo to prep her hair before styling. When used as a hair spray, it goes on dry and doesn’t leave your hair crunchy. Plus, like many other great Aveda products, Bree loves how it smells!

Tony Sadiq – Aveda Men Pure-Formance Grooming Clay

Always at the top of Tony’s favorite products, Grooming Clay works well with fine hair, is not greasy and leaves a matte finish. No matter whether you are going for a sleek or messy look, Tony says Clay can help!

Abbey Longstreet – Aveda’s Dry Shampoo

Also a newer product, Abbey is stuck on Aveda’s newest Dry Shampoo. It smells good while applying but doesn’t leave your hair with an overwhelming smell all day. The product gives some grip and has a cool applicator. Plus, it helps you go longer between washings, which prolongs the life of your color.

Dusty Rhode Visits Rick Mosley Hair to Teach the Latest in Cutting

RMH is dedicated to continuing education for its team members

Dusty Rhode teaches a cutting class at Rick Mosley Hair

Dusty Rhode teaches a cutting class at Rick Mosley Hair

One of the most successful and influential hairdressers of our times, Dusty Rhode, visited Rick Mosley Hair last month to share cutting tips with our team.  We were thrilled to welcome this passionate professional to West Des Moines to spend one day teaching the latest in men’s haircut trends and another day focused on women’s styles.

Dusty has trained at the Vidal Sassoon and American Crew Academies and has worked behind the chair since graduating from the Aveda Institute in 1997.  He has written salon curriculum, helped develop new hair products and has been featured at national hair shows.  In fact, Tony appeared on stage with him at the 2013 Aveda Congress and was just asked to do so again at the Mid-America Show in October in Cincinnati.

The 2005 Men’s Stylist of the Year finalist now focuses on sharing his talent and passion to help grow other hair professionals.  During his men’s cutting class at Rick Mosley Hair, he focused on the basics of building hair shapes that work well with different face and head shapes.  Unlike a barber would do, Dusty shared with our team the importance of not cutting the hair too short or slimming the sides too much.  Instead, keep it disconnected and pompadour-like.

Stop in to Rick Mosley Hair today to discuss your hair options with one of our cutting specialists.  Our commitment to ongoing training and education is second-to-none, and you’ll notice it in the quality of hair cutting you receive from our salon professionals.

2016 Hair Trend Report

Bold, Unconventional and Over-the-Top Hairstyles Will Hit the Runways

2016According to Behind the Chair, this season is all about celebrating individuality.  Stylists will be mixing textures, structures, shapes and eras to give each client his or her own personal look.

Bold cuts, such as cheekbone-length bobs, will take center stage, but wavy textures will make the look more modern.  Tapered sides with angles and long layers started to catch on over the past few months and we believe this trend will continue.  Longer hair will be pinned, braided and given that “wet hair” look.

Trendy pastel and gray coloring in 2015 will be set aside and more natural hair colors will prevail.  Platinum will continue to be hot through Spring and Summer, while the look will be a bit more natural and effortless than last season.  Some fashionistas also predict that glitter and gel will be used this year to revitalize roots between colorings – we’ll see if that trend hits Central Iowa.

Styles will be influenced by everything from Star Wars to London’s punk scene, and the color gold will take over in the New Year.  So whether your style is effortlessly chic or is inspired by the 90’s club scene, stop by Rick Mosley Hair today to discuss how our stylists can help you bring out your inner style.

Bring in photos or pin your favorite looks to your Instagram or Pinterest pages so you can show us a glimpse of what you’re going for.  We also carry a full line of Aveda hair products and make-up to help you complete your look.

Does Your Hair Need More Slip or More Grip?

The Rick Mosley Team reveals product secrets shared at a recent training event

BeaWatsonA few weeks ago, about half of the Rick Mosley Hair team attended an event and class led by Bea Watson, Aveda’s Global Hair Style Educator in London.  Bea was in Des Moines to spend a day sharing the latest styling and product tips, and a second day giving hands on experience to a group of select local stylists.

Our team enjoyed the experience and came away with quite a few of the hottest styling tips.  While none of the below product uses are “official,” we wanted to share these secrets with you so you can try them at home!

  1. Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Enhancer – This great product has a polymer in it that remembers your curls.  This means it not only helps with your current style, it helps maintain your perfect curly look the next few times you style your hair.
  2. Aveda Men’s Pure-Formance Firm Hold Gel – Women have secretly been using this men’s product to add more volume and grip to their hair.  While other products provide every day volume, this one is great to use on roots for special occasions and all-day hold.  We’ve tried it several times on salon customers recently with great results!
  3. Aveda’s Shampure Dry Shampoo – Yes, it is true!  Aveda just released a new dry shampoo.  This new product is going to be a game-changer for customers who want to make flat, greasy and even sweaty hair look presentable in a flash.  Watch our blog for a product review in the next few weeks.

At Rick Mosley Hair, we’re committed to keeping up on the latest trends and techniques, and this includes investing in our team by hosting and participating in training and classes all year round.  Stop by today to ask your stylist about what he/she has learned recently!

Why Waves are All the Rage

Summer styles featuring shoulder-length waves transition well into the back to school season

Many celebrities have adopted this great look.

Many celebrities have adopted this great look.

Selena Gomez and Christina Aguilera are just two of the many Hollywood Stars who have traded in lengthy locks or extensions for wavy shoulder-length hairdos.

You too can achieve the loose “Boho Waves” look.  The key to this look is to make your hair wavy without having a defined curl pattern.

Start by applying a texturing product, such as Aveda Thickening Tonic.  Then use a medium-sized curling iron and wrap small sections at a time toward your face.  Keep hold of the piece you just curled, unwrap it from the iron and then re-wrap it around the barrel again going in the opposite way.  One you have done all sections, use your fingers to soften and fluff the waves before spraying with Aveda Air Control hairspray.

Or, if you have super-straight hair, try loosely braiding it in three or four sections.  Leave the braids in for 15 to 30 minutes.  When you take them out, you’ll have perfectly imperfect bends.  For a slightly more sophisticated look, you can pull small sections away from your face and insert bobby pins.

Set up an appointment with your favorite Rick Mosley Hair stylist today and we’ll show you how you can achieve this effortless look.

Transform Your Hair Texture with a Brazilian Blowout

Ask your RMH stylist about our newest professional smoothing treatment

These before and after photos show how well the Brazilian Blowout process works!

These before and after photos show how well the Brazilian Blowout process works!

Tired of your wavy or frizzy hair?  Brazilian Blowout is the only smoothing treatment that creates healthier-looking wash-and-wear hair, every day, for even the most challenging hair types.

Our new Brazilian Blowout product is customizable to produce your desired results. For example, it makes straight or wavy hair sleek and smooth, or curly hair more manageable – while preventing frizz for all hair textures.  Our stylists at Rick Mosley Hair can help you determine how smooth, sleek, wavy or curly you want the results.

While the process takes a few hours, it produces long-lasting results – up to 12 weeks.  And, it is a cumulative treatment so the more you have it done, the better it works, the healthier it makes your hair, and the longer it lasts.  You can even have this done the same day as you have your hair colored.  In fact, it actually works best on color-treated or highlighted hair, improving its health by conditioning while sealing cuticles to lock in color and add shine.

This treatment is a good alternative for clients who have previously used Keratin.  It provides much more flexibility afterwards, as you can immediately put your hair-up, wash it, etc.  (With Keratin, you had to avoid these things for three full days to prevent creases.)  Following a Brazilian Blowout, you can wash, blow-dry, heat style, and put up your hair right away.  It can even reduce your styling time.

Call or stop in the salon today to learn more about this smoothing treatment that is preferred by experts, supermodels, A-list celebrities and others who walk the red carpet.  Clients have told us it’s like getting a blow out and having it last for three months!

Blow out bars aren’t just in the big cities any more.  They are popping up across the Midwest as well.  So what exactly is a blow out and why is this trend so popular?

Many of our customers love the look of their hair after leaving the salon.  While you don’t want to get your hair cut or colored more than necessary, we can give you that “just out of the salon” look when you schedule a wash and style – aka a blow out.

Made popular in New York and Chicago for the volume that can be added to your hair when dried properly, this service is perfect for a day when you just want to look (and feel) extra special.  Consider scheduling this quick service – that starts at just $25 – when you’ve got a job interview, are going to a fancy holiday event, or even just for a night on the town – let us pamper you at Rick Mosley Hair!

New Service Helps Keep Chemical Treatments from Hurting Hair

Ask your Rick Mosley Hair colorist about Olaplex today!

Ask your Rick Mosley Hair colorist about Olaplex today!New Service Helps Keep Chemical Treatments from Hurting Hair

Olaplex is a breakthrough new product that we’re going nuts for – and we know you will too!

At Rick Mosley Hair, our hair color specialists are always looking for the best new products and one just caught our attention in a big way!

RMH colorists have been trained that healthy hair is equally as important as beautiful color.  We don’t like seeing hair that has been severely damaged by hairdryers, straighteners, color or bleach.  We hate telling clients that going blonder will be too harsh on their hair.  The good news is, we think a new product called Olaplex will change all of this!

Color more often?  Have two processes – such as a perm and color treatment – done?  Go even lighter?  Now we can say yes to these requests without fearing breakage, due to this revolutionary new product.  In short, Olaplex is an additive that seeks out hidden damage and reinforces bonds by eliminating the bad reaction oxygen has with broken sulfite bonds in chemically treated hair, making them stronger, more flexible and more resistant to breakage.

Our colorists think Olaplex is the most exciting thing they have ever seen developed.  The ability to color hair without worrying about damage is revolutionary for clients and job changing for them.

From the Olaplex website:  “We started by finding two of the world’s leading PhD’s in materials and chemistry that had never worked on hair products before.  With this fresh outlook, this team invented a single ingredient chemistry, that is free of silicone or oils, that links broken bonds in the hair during and after chemical services, making them stronger than they were before.”

There are three ways to use the Olaplex system

Protective Treatment:  Done at the same time as color, highlights, balayage, or bleach services at our salon, Olaplex Bond Multiplier is added into your color or bleach formula. This will not impact the color result or grey coverage, however it may slightly increase processing time.  Olaplex Bond Perfector is applied after rinsing (and toning, if necessary).  It sets for 10 minutes before your hair is rinsed, shampooed and conditioned. Then, Olaplex Hair Perfector should be used at home once a week, to enhance and extend results between appointments.

Reparative Treatment:  Can be done independently, as a strengthening pre-treatment, or as a restorative post-treatment.  Olaplex Bond Multiplier is mixed in a solution and applied to dry hair, combed through, and allowed to set for 5 minutes.  Olaplex Bond Perfector is then applied directly over it, without rinsing, and set for 10 minutes, before being rinsed, shampooed, and conditioned.  Again, Olaplex Hair Perfector should be used at home once a week, to enhance and extend results between appointments.

Both:  To give damaged hair the most intense therapy, both of the above can be done.

Don’t just take it from us, Rick Mosley Hair client Lisa Copple recently told us, “I’m so thankful my colorist recommended this amazing new product.  My hair is amazingly soft after my color treatment and remains that way still.  Also, I found my color to be much brighter than ever before.”

Call our salon today to find out more about this bond multiplier that is dramatically revolutionizing corrective colors and blonding services by eliminating breakage and leaving hair feeling amazing.  We’re confident you’ll notice an immediate increase in the health, strength and softness of your hair.
